This was entitled "HM Dockyard Paddle Tug 'Forceful' " by D. Parsons. The article is principally about making a 1/48 scale operating (but quite detailed) model. Alas, no plans of the vessel itself were provided. The article also had some background on the real thing. It seems that "around 1957/58 seven 'Director' class paddle tugs were built for service principally in HM Dockyards, where their compact design made them ideal for handling aircraft carriers. They were unique in being the only naval paddle tugs in use anywhere in the world." It was stated that 'Forceful' was built by the Portsmouth Dockyard. Some of the Class were built by the Yarrow company, and it is for one of these that plans reside in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. In the article, the one then still in service in Gibraltar (builder not identified) was identified as 'Faithful'. A note by the Editor of MS states that 'Forceful' was officially retired from the Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service in 1981. No other names in the Class were identified. Brian Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Ned Barnett Subject S-Boat Sub models? Are there any models available of the US Navy's S-Boat submarines, designed in WW-I and built 1919 through 1925? Not to be confused with the immediate pre-WW-II S-Class of pre-Gato fleet boats (Sturgeon, Seadragon, etc.) ... Ned Barnett, http//www.barnettmarcom.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "dengar" Subject Russian Kashin Class Smetlivy Hi Guys, I don't know if you have seen this before, worth a look if you are building the Kombrig kit. http//navsource.narod.ru/photos/02/184/index.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Erhardtsen" Subject USS WOLVERINE It is very interesting to see the photos of the big model of the paddlewheel aircraft carrier USS WOLVERINE. (links in SMML 2937), but where can I find some drawings? I have fore a long time wanted to build the USS WOLVERINE and USS SABLE in scale 1/700. Regards Erik Erhardtsen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Gary Mansfield" Subject Paddle steamers & IWM Photos Hi SMML Think Tank! Many thanks for all the replies on paddle steamers of WWI & WWII. (Some books on order). I really liked that 172 model of USS Wolverine, now that is something!! Any books out there about her and her sister ship? Glad to hear John Lambert is "back in the fray"! See you at Telford 2005 John. (Any plans on paddle mine sweepers coming or the AA role paddlers moored in the Thames)? Finally, how do you obtain photos from IWM (Imperial War Museum in UK)? Do you need full IWM ref details or just HMS ... With a date? Kind regards GARY MANSFIELD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From "Rod" Subject Models for sale I have some models on Ebay auction under my username of c177guy.
