It's 1/500. I've never seen the resulting model. The Imperial War Museum in London displayed a nice model of one in 1977 except that the Squid mortar was mounted backwards, firing astern. Not that it's likely for sale. I'm scratch-building a model of HMS Barrosa as a fleet radar picket, in 1/600 to use RN detail parts mostly from WEM. The original hull came from Airfix's Daring kit. Every structure above the main weather decks is scratch-built. The main radar antenna (radar type 965) comes from WEM's 1/700 PE set but it measures as 1/600. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Reid, John (AFIT)" Subject Shippy things to do in Italy One word of warning photography of warships is illegal, as is photography of trains, bridges, and other possible strategic assets. At Aeroporto Leonardo da Vinci (“Fiumicino”) Museum of Roman Ships – 5 vessels dug up on site when airport was built (and there is a place in Pisa with about 15 others) Taranto 1. Whilst avoiding wearing RN uniform (!), great shots from public garden of the frigates in the trot in the Mar Piccolo 2. Mooring point for Guiseppe Garibaldi while she is in port is about 5km to south down Mar Grande – you will need a long lens 3. Mothballed frigates and DDs are sometimes to be found further inland in the Mar Piccolo Brindisi 1. Michael Zimmerman Dallas, Texas far from the sea ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From GORDONBUT@aol.com Subject Re Battle Class Destroyers A Battle class kit is provide by Deans Marine in the UK. This is a kit of HMS Solebay and cost about £300. contact me off line if you want more detail Gordon Buttress Archivist SWA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Reid, John (AFIT)" Subject Now seeking book about A-I class destroyers There is a World Ship Society book on this topic, Amazon to Ivanhoe British Standard Destroyers of the 1930s, J. English, Paperback 144 pages (June 1993), ISBN 0905617649 A fuller form of the author’s name is John I. English. I understand that this is *the* reference for wartime mods and paint-schemes to the vessels – certainly it is cited by DK Brown. Of course it is out of print, and I heard from some WSS people a year or so ago that it had surprised them how fast it sold out. I have sought it through Amazon marketplace (i.e. used books) but there is already one buyer waiting for any copy which comes up there. I also checked through Motorbooks in London without result. Does anybody have any other ideas where I could try to buy one? Or even better, I would be grateful if SMMLies who are booksellers could please let me know if they have a copy for sale, offlist. Even more interesting is that I have had a search made in the Bodleian Library, and in the British Library, and neither of these Copyright Libraries appears to have it in their collection. Does anybody know of other titles which cover the same ground in detail, in case there just is not a copy of this book to be had or found? If there are WSS members on the list, perhaps a re-print is warranted?
