This is a kit of HMS Solebay and cost about £300. contact me off line if you want more detail << And a review in this month's Model Boat, looks interesting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Kdg345@aol.com Subject AKA info I have built a scratch model at 1/96 scale of an AKA. I would now like to build a cutaway model showing detail seen in an inboard profile drawing. I have seen these advertised, but my inquires go unanswered by the company offering these models. Anyone out there know where I can find some how-to-do it information? Ken Groom Kent, Washington ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From beyondsun@mindspring.com Subject Re "1/500" Battle Class DD kit Hi (Potter4), Surprised Dave Wells hadn't responded about this one already. (Don't worry, Dave - I'll cover for you.) The "1/500" Battle-class kit you're referring to is the old FROG Trafalgar/Battle-class, in about 1/300 scale. Various FROG molds have been re-popped by UPC and then by NOVO, KOPRO, EASTERN EXPRESS - and who knows what-all other Eastern European manufacturers. So you're right it often shows up on eBay - wrongly labeled "1/500 scale" (unless I'm wrong) - and may appear under very different names, both kit and manufacturer. But AFAIK this is the same basic FROG mold. Although the quality of the molding is usually worse each time around - so pay accordingly! Check out Rajendra's List (kickback welcome later, Dave! LOL) for a little detail on these kits http//www.quuxuum.org/rajens_list/shiprevs.html HTH, Matty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Mitsuaki Kubota Subject Re Mystery Model Michael, The model you are asking is probably products of Konishi. http//www3.ocn.ne.jp/~konishi/ It seems that kit of KOSO MARU is out of production now. I myself don't have the kit, but I have found the name of KOSO MARU in Konishi's advertisement appeared on old back issue of "Ships of the World"(Kaijin-Sha) about 25 years ago. According to the link page of the below, KOSO MARU was lunched and completed in 1956 for Daido Kaiun Shipping Company, sold to Philippine President Line in 1972, and finally broken up in 1979. http//homepage3.nifty.com/jpnships/showa4/showa4_hokubei_daidokaiun.htm This page is written in Japanese only, but listing other 5 sisters of KOSO MARU. Of course, KOBU MARU is also listed. Hope these helps. Mitsuaki ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From David Wells Subject Re Battle Class Destroyers potter4@att.net wrote >> Model kits of a Battle class destroyer are autioned on eBay sometimes. It's 1/500. I've never seen the resulting model. << As one of the few 1/500 fans left, this is of some interest to me. I'm assuming that the kit is not expensive, and probably not a new mold. I speculate that it is not really a 1/500 kit. I have a sneaking suspicion that it is really the old FROG 1/304-ish scale Battle class, or some reissue of it. Most FROG ship kits were 1/500 scale, and an unsophisticated seller might not know that the Battle class was one of the exceptions. >> I'm scratch-building a model of HMS Barrosa as a fleet radar picket, in 1/600 to use RN detail parts mostly from WEM. The original hull came from Airfix's Daring kit. Every structure above the main weather decks is scratch-built. The main radar antenna (radar type 965) comes from WEM's 1/700 PE set but it measures as 1/600. << Doesn't WEM sell 1/600 scale brass sets? I thought they did...... In fact, they used to make a very nice resin 4.5" twin that should be pretty close for your project. And you're a braver man than I am for doing that sort of scratchbuilding. David R. I was already aware of the existing UK, Canadian, and USCG pages and was wondering if there were any out there specifically on US Navy Flower class corvettes. The USS Courage stayed in US Navy service through the end of WWII. I tried the suggestion to search on Temptress class, and found some nice site that covered the US Navy modifications. Courage was a 1939 Harland and Wolff built Flower (ex Pansy, ex Heartsease) so I don't know which type stern she had. Ted told me that they replaced all the British guns with US ones, and I now know that she had a 4"/50 and a 3"/50 as her main guns and also had depth charge racks ('with extensions' ?), along with various other weapons. Specifically for Courage, I don't know if she retained her bandstand or not, had the 'square' or 'round' stern, or if she was a long or short forecastle ship. If the extension aft to the stack is what makes a Flower a long forecastle, then that answers that question. Again, thanks for all the help, now I just have to get started on the project!
