The carriage of this monster to Milan by road was a nine-day wonder earlier this year John Reid Rome ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From potter4@att.net Subject Modeling a Battle Class Destroyer as a DDR David Wells writes >> Doesn't WEM sell 1/600 scale brass sets? I thought they did...... In fact, they used to make a very nice resin 4.5" twin that should be pretty close for your project. And you're a braver man than I am for doing that sort of scratchbuilding. << Hello, David Thank you for the compliment. Yes, my evolving model of HMS Barrosa features WEM's resin 1/600 4.5-inch turrets (PRO 604). They are the upper forward section of the Battle turrets. The guns are scratch-built from telescoped steel tubes. The model will feature WEM 1/600 PE from PE 624 for yards and for particular electronics antennas. The availability of WEM's parts is the major reason that I chose to model this ship in 1/600. An exception is the big antenna (AKE-2, "double bedstead") of the type 965 radar. The PE 624 antenna is out of scale. WEM's "1/700" antenna (PE 701) is in fact 1/600 .52 inch wide, precisely right for the actual 26-foot antenna. GMM or someone offers a 1/700 PE set with a type 965 radar but I have not seen it. I make PE with a Micromark toolkit. So far these include the masts, upper decks, the sides of the bridge, the Squid mortar, GDS-2 optical sights, the funnel cap grating, and various other fittings. On the electronic drawing board are boat handling equipment, templates, and an improved foremast. The deckhouses are mostly of Evergreen strip styrene. I know of no good detailed drawings of the Battle-class DDRs. Being scratch-built, there are no instruction sheets and no painting guides. I scale it from photographs, using trigonometry to adjust for parallax. A crewman of this ship sent me very useful views of her, several in color. As President Kennedy said, I seek to do this thing not because it is easy but because it is hard! If any SMMLer has color photos of these ships and would e-mail scans (300 dpi resolution or higher), they could help! Cheers, Mike ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject Re about things to do in Italy John Reid's informative posting in SMML Vol. 2971 on 21OCT05 about things to do in Italy mentions a WW I Austro/Hungarian navy Battleship, KUK (or perhaps KuK) VERIBUTUS UNITIS. Some time ago SMML ran a thread (instigated by me) about the meaning of "KUK" (or "KuK"). Although not in 100 % agreement, the general consensus was that these letters prefacing the names of vessels of the Austro/Hungrian navy prior to 1918 meant "Kaiserliche und Koenigliche", which translates into "King and Emperor". "USS" and "HMS" are fairly well known, and we now have a handle on "KUK" (or "KuK"), I would appreciate it if any SMML naval linguists would please clarify the correct term ("KUK" or "KuK") as well as enlighten us as to the prefacing letters and their meaning as used by other navies of the world. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Harold Stockton" Subject new Niko Models 1/700 destroyer escorts Niko models has released three new 1/700 destroyer escorts; one French and two USN, in the form of the French Le Corse (E50) class, and, the USS Gendreau and USS Liddle (ADP), both of the latter being of the Buckley class. The Le Corse (E50) class L'escorteur rapide (fast escort), and the following E52 and E-52b, were built in the early 1950s, and the class was made up of the following F761 Le Corse F762 Le Brestois F763 Le Boulonnais F764 F765 Le Normand F766 Le Picard F767 Le Gascon F768 Le Lorrain F769 Le Bourguignon F770 Le Champenois F771 Le Savoyard F772 Le Breton F773 Le Basque F774 L'Agenais F775 Le Béarnais F776 L'Alsacien F777 Le Provencal F778 Le Vendéen Le Corse and Le Bordelais took part in the 1956 Suez landings as escorts to the Arromanches ( modified Colossus ) carrier, and these would make nice support vessels for the just released L'Arsenal info@larsenal.com , 1/700 Arromanches ( modified Colossus ) as she appeared in 1954 before her major refit. The (E50) class L'escorteur rapide were built after the experiences of the battle of the Atlantic made it possible to determine the type of ships necessary for the escort of oceanic convoys. From 1943, a type of escort ship like the frigates English River class, or American DEs appears as the destroyers of choice, and France acquired escorts of six of each for their navy. These boats will also be the basis of the thoughts which will lead to the creation of the fast escort ships. In 1949, three types of escort ships are envisaged by the French navy as the - escort ships of 2500 tons, intended for the accompaniment of the large combat ships like the aircraft carriers, these ships will become the their future Escorteur d'escadre (escort ships of squadron) T-47B, as released by L'Arsenal. - escort ships of 1500 tons, especially designed for the escort of the convoys and the anti-submarine warfare, and will be their future L'escorteur rapide (fast escort ships) as released by Niko Models. - escort ships of 600 tons, whose realization will be abandoned, except perhaps for the coastal escort ships. Their armament for the E50 and the following E52 class L'escorteur rapide was typical for the time period armament of a strong AAA armament of six 57 mm model 51/60 in three twin-mount turrets; one forward and two in the rear. On the E52b series, the superfiring mounting, that on the roof of the rear deckhouse will be replaced by the antisubmarine mortar of 305 mm. The secondary armament was composed of two 20 mm Oerlikon guns, each located on the side of the central roof with the rear of the funnel, level with the back of the mast. These traditional guns are without automated aiming and are used only as a last resort. The limited antisubmarine armament of this series of ships was a derivative of the "hedgehog" of the WW-II, the sixfold Bofors rocket launcher of 375 mm. On the E50 type, this one was right in front of the telepointor for the 57 mm guns. While on the types E52, it was located in front of the rear 57 mm mount. Additionally, these vessels of the E50 class carried the "acoustic" K2 torpedes, until these were replaced by the L3 type in 1962. These were carried in four triple mounts on the deck-edge. With the appearance of the E-52 class the torpedo armament was removed, the bridge area was enlarged, the forward 57 mm mount is lowered one deck and the forward "hedgehog" is exposed so as to give the gun-mount a clear field of fire. As the new French LR305 weapon was not ready with the active service of the E50 and E52 series, they were mounted on their type E52b class; the F776 L'Alsacien, F777 Le Provencal and F778 Le Vendéen. In this last class of the E50 series, the bridge area is again enlarged, the 375 mm rocket launcher is removed, the funnel is redesigned, and the rear superfiring 57 mm turret is removed and is replaced by the LR305 quadruple mortar of 305mm. The next Niko Models release are two Buckley Class Destroyer Escorts in 1/700 scale. These are the USS Gendreau (DE-639), and the USS Liddle (DE-206/APD-60). Both welcome additions to WW-II USN destroyer collectors, and those other countries, like France and the RN, who used these very rugged vessels. Thanks again must be made to both Niko www.nikomodel.pl , and L'Arsenal Models www.larsenal.com , for their attention to naval collectors of the smaller vessels. Harold Stockton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From "John Lambert" Subject My Warship and Naval Weapons Plans Remember that you heard it here FIRST. On this premier and now long established Web Site. I am pleased to announce a result! (Well it is for Me). My old Web Site is again back in commission under a new web mistress. I was informed just yesterday that http//www.lambert-plans.com is up and running under my new tag. My next task (I will pass this on) is to add all my new subjects drawn over the last 18 months or so. My previous web master Eberhart in Germany established my site and gave it the layout and standard that I was justly proud of. Unfortunately ill health meant that he was unable to continue. I recently moved and had to re-establish a new telephone and computer communication. For a year or so I have been seeking a new webmaster and Sam (bless her) has volunteered to take up the task. For my friends in SMML I will be visiting Telford in November and my base will be, as usual at the White Ensign stand, with Caroline, John and Dave. I look forward to meeting up again. Back to my drawing board and L/S/260 - another sheet on the Fairmile "D".
