Veribus Unitis 7 for Roger Pearson 8 k.u.k. VIRIBUS UNITIS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MODELLERS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From "Phil Lord" Subject 1/600 Battle Class DD I have a copy of Airfix Magazine Guide #7 "Warship Modeling" from 1975 that has an 11 page article entitled "Modelling 'Battle' Class Destroyers." I can forward a photocopy if you like--please contact me off list at lordp@hclibrary.org Phil Lord Elkridge, MD USA Where it is snowing 3 hours to the west and gale force winds 3 hours east--ya gotta love "Mother Nature!" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Roland Mar Subject Re Name of Italian naval hero We have a winner. Ken Goldman nailed it right off. Mind you, he is kind of a historical specialist in that type of attack . Gotta think of harder questions. Roland Mar ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Robert Mosher" Subject Visiting New Zealand Well, having managed to set it up so that we can visit New Zealand (from the US) we are now planning the trip. Any advice on naval/nautical sites/sights would be welcome - off-list would be great if you don't want to dilute the list discussions! We are already looking at the ferry rides between the North and South Islands and a fjord cruise (always a favorite). Robert A. Mosher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Connor, Michael" Subject Re Building a Battle class destroyer (Battle plan?) Thank you Mike Potter. There are several things in your explanation which will save me a lot of work. Mike Connor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "David N. Lombard" Subject Re Translating from Italian (was KuK vessels) From "Ed Wandall, Aviation Research Group/US" >> Capitano di Fregeta Luigo Rizzo. Captain Luigi Rizzo sank the Szent Istvan and the Wien. If your browser has a translation feature (or you can speak Italian) check out http//www.marina.difesa.it/storia/MOVM/Parte04/MOVM418.htm << Who needs translation in a browser? Just go to Babel Fish http//babelfish.altavista.com/ Of course, this suggests another quiz Why Babel Fish? David N. Lombard Rossmoor, Orange County, CA http//www.fourmilab.ch/cgi-bin/uncgi/Earth?imgsize=320&opt=-z&lat=33.8&ns=North&lon=118.08&ew=West&alt=7&img=learth.evif ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From John Sweetman Subject Re K.u.K. Veribus Unitis Dear Sir, As a modeller & historian, (mainly Aircraft I'm afraid) Though with a considerable interest in the Austro Hungarian empire, As events in the 19th C. there have considerably affected 20th C. (which has largely been forgotten by modern history books!) I'm presently the warranty surveyor on the DB26 erecting mini islands all over the Gulf of Thailand & cannot readily get at my references. I note some minor discrepancies regarding the illfated Veribus Unitis K.u.K. Was Luigi Rizzo the Captain of MAS 95 (the Tug!) and Lt. Cmdr Rafaelle Rosetti with Surgeon Rafaelle Paolucci, skipper & backseater respectively of a torpedo (Mignatta S2) (the tow!)? Did they survive? A very gallant double bubble with the depot ship Wien. B.Rgds John Sweetman (Captain, Modeller & dogsbody!) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From potter4@att.net Subject for Roger Pearson Roger, thank you for your kind message, which some keystroke of mine destroyed along with the reply I was writing you. Please forward your message again and I will send you a photo of the Battle DDR, incomplete as it (she?) is. I'm honored by your interest and by the interest of other SMMLers. Cheers, Michael Potter San Diego, Calif., USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Graham & Helen Rees" Subject k.u.k. VIRIBUS UNITIS Franklyn suggested I post links as there seems to be some interest in this class of ships. A picture of the ship sinking is at http//www.warship.get.net.pl/Austro-Wegry/Battleships/1912_Viribus_Unitis_class/Viribus_Unitis_13.jpg A site with history of the class (including the same photo) is www.viribusunitis.ca This site is a project rendering 3D images of the ship. Viribus Unitis was sunk in Pola harbour (SMMLies will remember the WWII Italian Heavy cruiser "Pola"). It constantly amazes me how people who do not try to learn from our mistakes in history think counrty boundaries have "always been" as they are today. Thankfully most SMMLies know a bit of history, but then again we often accuse the military (whichever one) of preparing to fight the last war.
