Might be some help. www.navybooks.com Search "Rodney" Have a good 'en Mike Price ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Robert Healy" Subject Re Battle-damaged ships Before you decide to go all out on that Tipitz thing, be advised that Heller will send you a replacement part if they have one on hand. Buried somewhere in the instructons should be a mail address for this. They state that they want stamps or something or other prior to giving you the part. However a few years ago I was is a similar position and decided to try to get the part. I mailed a request asking if they had the part and how many stamps I needed to send. A couple of weeks later a very nicely wrapped tube arrived in the mail containing the part. Also, there was a hand written note stating not to worry about the stamps. Very impressive. Regards, Bob Healy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "-les foran" Subject battle damage Re The current line in the forum concerning battle damaged models I think the main reason why photos of battle-damaged ships are so rare is because such pictures are discouraged for security reasons (why help your enemy determine the effectiveness of his weapons?). A few years ago, I did do an unusual diorama representing the present state of the Battleship Arizona. A friend (DJ Whitehead) had given me a really beat-up model of this ship, with the intention of its being used as a parts source. Being the tightwad that I am, I realized that I had more than enough of the ship left to model it in its present state, with the help of some color pictures from National Geographic Magazine. I cut the lower portion of the hull away, and mounted it on a base covered with a pre-mixed grouting material. The deck was modified per the magazine article. The memorial hall structure was scratchbuilt and mounted atop the hull. The floating docks and tour boats were scratchbuilt, and suspended by hidden wires so they appear to "float" above the sunken hull. All this was greatly aided by the fact that the ship apparently sunk on an even keel in the shallow water. Since completing the diorama, I have gotten more information concerning the underpinnings of the memorial hall, and plan on revising the model with a more accurate representation of these portions. Congratulations, Shane and Lorna on reaching the 3000th edition. I have been on assignment for the past six months on the East Coast, it is good to be back and getting caught up on SMML. Les Foran Too Long out of Salt Water ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "John Lambert" Subject Congratulations indeed Hello you two down south in warm Auz. Congratulations on reaching, and keeping up the SMML standards for now, over 3003 issues. A great service to model makers world wide, and it is very seldom indeed that it does not reach the worldwide screens. When you have those so occasional breaks I get withdrawal symptoms, and you are sadly missed. Please keep up the work, it is indeed MUCH appreciated and a ONE OFF service. Best wishes to all the members, and those from that first convention aboard USS Salem in particular. It was nice to see those faces at Telford last weekend. Yours "Aye" John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Doug Bauer" Subject German sea mines Apparently, Andrea Miniatures has released a resin German submarine mine in 132 scale and there is a small photo of it in Squadron's newest catalog...has anyone out there purchased this mine? If so, I would be eternally grateful for a few digital scans of it, or even a couple drawings of it, plus its dimensions (in 132, so I can scale it down to 172). I'd like to put some minelaying racks on the Revell S-Boot, and info on German sea mines is scarce, at best. Thanks in advance.
