As one that has chipped and painted and washed down a few of the real ones, it is amazing how even in peace time, how dirty a naval vessel becomes in such a short time. The only time any ship looks like most of the models one sees is when she was launched or has just come out of the yards. In too short a period of time, she gets dirty and stained and even though crew keeps washing her down and chipping and repainting, she does show this wear. Paint fades and wares and is missed matched during repainting. The hull will show all sorts of sea wear and black rub marks from tugs and pier side fenders. The stack tops and black mast turn from black to a dirty grey in a short period of time, not to mention what the stack gasses can do to dirty up a fresh painted bulkhead or deck and add a JP5 fuel spill and you get the picture. Add to this the wear the crew adds, the black scuff marks on the ladder ways, spills, maintenance and the damage from normal shipboard operations, such as on loads and off loads, fuel transfers and you get a clearer picture of what any working ship does look like. Ships are like any equipment they show their age. Just my two cents worth from an old sailor Take care, Mark Micucci Ex-EM2 USN ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Mark Micucci" Subject SPS10 and SPS29/37 Radar Dimensions Hello All Building a 1/96th model of the USS Edson DD946 as she appeared in the late 60 early 70’s when I served on her. Looking for dimensions or detailed drawings of the SPS10 and SPS29/37 radar antennas. Also looking for dimensions and detailed drawings of the small boat davits. The davits were different for the Captain’s gig and the motor whale boat. Will appreciate any information or directions where to look or what companies to contact. Congratulations on 3000+ issues, this site is just the best, keep up the great work! Keep the faith and fair seas, Mark Micucci Ex-EM2 USN ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Subject damaged ships the end result of a damaged ship is dead and dying men, thats not what I think we should be recreating or attempting to do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Skyking918@aol.com Subject Japanese Warship Design I have some questions for all you experts out there on Japanese warships of World War II 1. Given the influence of the Royal Navy on the Imperial Japanese Navy and the fact that many early Japanese warships were designed and built in British shipyards, were Japanese warships of World War II designed to English or metric measurements? 2. What about weapons? Japanese naval guns seem to be metric for the most part, but what about torpedoes? Were the '24-inch' Long Lance torpedoes really '24-inch' as most sources state, or were they actually metric? I can't reveal the reason I need this information, except to say that it might involve a book! Finally, are there any budding authors out there living close by either of the two preserved Liberty Ships interested in doing a "Liberty Ship On Deck" for Squadron/Signal Publications? Please respond to these inquiries at my office email editor(at)squadron.com. Thanks. Michael McMurtrey Editor, Squadron/Signal Publications Carrollton, Texas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Medway" Subject Q class destroyer colours In Alan Raven’s Volume 3 of his RN camouflage series, there is a drawing of a Q showing white colours. But in the attached photo of Quickmatch in the same colour scheme, she is wearing a pennant number which to me is lighter than the “white” background. If the hull is white, what is the pennant number colour and if the pennant number is white, what is the hull colour. Needed as Task Force 72 has a Q waiting to be painted in this scheme! One model was at the Regatta last week painted using Alan Raven’s book & White Ensign’s colours.
