Ray ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Shirley Sachsen" Subject location location location >> At the moment, terrible. However, since Richmond is planning a major museum center for the nearby former Ford (IIRC) plant and plans to move the RED OAK VICTORY there, it should improve (assuming the plans go forward). << interesting. Alameda is too far away from the tourists in SF to do any good, however, Stockton is just dandy because it's 'accessible'. hm. and Richmond, with the gauntlet that that city presents in getting to Pt.Richmond is okay, too? hm. however, despite the sewer that portions of Richmond are, the town itself has some interest in its own history. their city museum is a must see, (there's a nice section devoted to the shipyard along with a reprint of the yard's newsletter listing all the ships built)--so long as you can find parking right in front. it's in a lively portion of town. when I was there, a block away was a full on rock'n'roll gun battle. but, hey, Richmond is a better location than Alameda. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "David J Shirlaw" Subject Re Comments on the quality of the photos in Chesneau's newest books? I have the Yorktown book and it is excellent. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Rick Nelson" Subject Re Renwal Polaris kits Tom writes >> The gradual taper of the forward hull can be seen (along with what I believe may be Rick's sonar installation near the bow) in the third photo down on Don Murphy's outstanding Casimir Pulaski SSBN page http//www.usscasimirpulaski.com/anatomy2refit.htm << The sonar dome the Houston carried in the mid-60s was much larger that what is seen in the third photo on Don's web site. The approx. measurements were 12' long by 6' wide by 5' high. I've attached a .jpg file of the Houston in dry-dock in Holylock in '65. It's a bow-on shot of the boat and starts just at the sonar dome. One of our Nav ETs, George Stratton, is staring into the back side of it through an inspection plate. His presence gives a good reference for seeing just how large the dome was. This photo also shows the gradual taper of the forward portion of the hull as Tom mentioned. If SMML cannot make the attachment available and you are interested send me an email and I'll send the file to you. When I built my version of the Houston using the Renwal kit I did spend quite a bit of time trying to re-adjust the hull taper. Rick Hi all, The photo of the USS Houston has been uploaded to the SMML site under Misc Reference. Shane - who must really get his posterior (insert more suitable word here) into gear and update the SMML site again and keep it updated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Nuno Rubim" Subject Re HP Models Thanks to all who answered my question. The problem with HP is that they not only don't reply to my questions but also made mandatory to pay by PayPal, a firm from wich I had several complains, even later cancelling my application. As to NNT, once they sent me a kit with a piece with minor defect wich was not substituted, but I will try again to order some kits. Although perhaps the HP kits are not the best, the question is that they are the only firm to issue some types of little known warships and with some home working and using PE parts it is possible to obtain nice models. The best for 2006. Nuno Rubim ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Lompe, Keith H. OS2" Subject Need help Hello all, I am new to the mailing list, well it is my second week. I was wondering if anyone could help me. I recently started building model boats. I got a Dumas CG 41'Utility Boat kit 1214. It states on the box that I can install running hardware to make it RC. But on the plans on the inside it has no specifications as far as where to but the screws, rudders, motors, etc. I have searched over the internet and I can not find anything that would give me any clue as to how to install the hardware correctly. Dumas does sell a running hardware kit 2337 but I have been warned by a few people that the bushings tend to give out and that it would be less expensive if I bought it seperately. However it does have instructions. Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions I sure could use the help. Thank you very much. Keith H. Lompe ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From SteveWiper@aol.com Subject Re 1128 planking >> On US BB's the planking was normaly 5 to 5.5" wide and the length was always different but usually 25ft. In your scale it would be about .042 wide. << Actually, on the older USN BBs, that would be BB-48 and earlier, the deck planking was 4 in. width planks on all wood covered decks. With the construction of the "Fast Battleships", that would be BB-55 and later, the wood deck covering was still 4 in. from forward, running aft all the way to the expansion joint just aft of the #3 turret. From there aft, it was 5 in. This was the case for all the FBs. I do not think any of the surviving re-decked FBs retain their original wood covered deck configurations at this time. Originally, the decking was in Teak on all USN BBs, but I think the survivors have not been re-decked with this. Also, do not make the gross mistake that I see on many large scale warship models by not installing the correct margin planking. This is especially needed in 1/128 scale, as the lack of this detail will show up like a sore thumb! Check you photo references for this detail. It is there! Steve Wiper www.classicwarships.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From beyondsun@mindspring.com Subject Renwal Polaris kits Earth to Tom, Earth to Tom...now you're going off the deep end the other way, buddy; I am not going to be producing - ever - any 1/200 scale castings of an entire Polaris class hull! (LOL) What I'm looking for are DO-ABLE ways of fixing up all you guys who want to build the old Renwal mold (despite its major flaws). You all know you want to build it anyway - and there are a LOT of you! LOL (Including me.) And including Donny Murphy himself - because it was he who requested I scratch up a more accurate Polaris prop in the first place! LOL (Yes, he is building a USS Casimir Pulaski - and all closed up, I might add - from the Renwal 1/200 kit. Don is one of my bestest modeling buddies - and I gave him that kit to begin with - so this whole thing is truly coming full circle! LOL) Anyway, I do appreciate your pointing out the details (and the pics you sent - Thank You), as well as the referral to the Casimir Pulaski site. Now, you want to hear something else funny it was just today I downloaded virtually every interior- and exterior picture from the CP website! Gonna compress them and see if I can help Donny revamp the site to display faster and more reliably, etc.. (An what a small, small world this is...!) So I will definitely consider the sonar domes - I understand there were several - as well as the other external details we've been discussing. Including now the kit nose cone, which I will take a serious look at... Cheers, Matty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From beyondsun@mindspring.com Subject Regulus missle discussion Hi Paul, First I want to thank you for being practically the only one who can spell "Regulus" correctly! LOL I have a paperback book, "Spy Sub", which is a thinly veiled history of USS Halibut's exploits in her first Special Ops years. It contains a passage about the crew watching, for entertainment purposes, old movies of guided Regulus landings (and failed landing attempts) on an undisclosed "tropical island", with "palm trees", etc.. Sounds exactly like what you were talking about. As to the other story of flying and losing control of a nuclear-armed Regulus - aimed at another country, no less (?) - and going on to lose that nuke in Venezuela - without creating a major incident (even all these years later) - and then LEAVING it there, well that all sounds patently impossible to believe! Cheers, Matty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From 03136040@brookes.ac.uk Subject Lynx Mk. 8 and Merlin ASW Helicopters Has anyone bought the remote controlled Royal Navy Type 23 frigate by HFM Marine? Basically, after a little work, the ship is scaled at ~1/183 and the molded Merlin supplied is too small and lacks detail. -Is there a Lynx Mk. 8 or Merlin ASW near the 1/183 scale available? -While I know there is no model at the scale I'm loking for, I've only found 1/72 scale which is much too large for the flight deck. Any help would be well received! Rich ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From "John Lambert" Subject MY WEBSITE IS UPDATED FOR 2006 Hi to You All For those members interested in good accurate drawings of RN Warships and Naval Weapons, my new Webmistress, home from University in Leeds, has once again come up trumps and updated my site at www.lambert-plans.com. All (or most) of my most recent drawings have been added, over 50 warship items. Right now I am working on a three sheet subject HMTBD Telemachus, a minelaying destroyer of 1918, and I am redrawing one of my very early weapons. My L/O/07 4" Mark IV Gun on the Mark P IX Mounting from 1914. This WW I destroyer gun drawing was originally completed in December 1976 and enlarged in May 2002. I have always considered it rather basic but in 1996 whilst undertaking further reserach I found the BR (Book of Reference) BR 627 of September 1942. This small gunnery manual was issued to small warships which carried this still useful mounting from the Great War. As a result I have given myself the task of completely starting from scratch and redrawing it, and adding all the new data, including the exploded view of the 4" Gun Breech Mechanism on two large sheets. (Does this make me a sad person) ? For those interested in RN Coastal Forces, you will find a mass of previously unseen British Power Boat Comany subjects. All redrawn from original material kindly provided by the late Mr George Selman the wartime Chief Designer. He gave me a mass of orginal michrofiche and I have been slowly working through them in the interim period. All the then current ideas to upgun the well known 71' 6" B. P.Bt Co designs, plus other gems. HMS Harrier of 1934 a seven sheet set is completed too. These were to have been seen in our (Al and I's) - Volume 3 (and 4) of Allied Coastal Forces, but I doubt that this will ever see the light of day. in spite of my having completed over 43,000 words of text. But we shall see! Happy New Year to you all. Your comments here would be appreciated!
