Usual disclaimers I have no connection with the store; I was there as a customer Monday afternoon 9 Jan, the kits might be all gone by now (but they had so many that I doubt it). Nearest underground Holborn. John Reid Rome ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Harold Stockton" Subject Re USS Indianola Derek "Deke" Wakefield wrote >> By any chance, does anyone her(e) know the origin of the naming of the US Civil War ironclad USS Indianola? I'm not a civil war ship buff, but a friend referred me to the US Navy History Center illustration page owing to my interest in the former port city (now ghost town) of Indianola, Texas. << Yes Deke, Indianola is a former very large former gulf-coast port city, being one of the largest deep water ports along the Texas gulf-coast, that was absolutely leveled twice by hurricanes that hit exactly there. I have been there and cannot wait to buy a place built on the rock of the former lighthouse. >> He assumed the ship was named in honor of the Texas city because it was a major gulf coast port at the time of the Civil War. That struck me as iffy given Texas was part of the Confederacy at the time the ship was commissioned. Also, there were two other cities (albeit smaller) named Indianola at the time (in Iowa and Nebraska). << I would tend to support the Iowa factor as she was built in Cincinnati, OH, approximately 600 miles distance. Harold Stockton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "emers" Subject Falklands Conflict All, Can anyone suggest suitable sources of plans for Falklands era Merchant and RFA's? I have already obtained a copy of Jane's Merchant ships, 1982 that has 1/2400th side views (not great for scaling up to 1/600th and making a reasonably accurate model) off the majority of the British merchant ships but I am struggling to find plans of RFA's such as the Round Table Class LSL's (Sir Lancelot, etc). I have tried NMM and various ship museums to no avail. Thanks, Richard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Hank Lapa" Subject Re Nukes on Carriers Depending on the dims of the weapon, the A-4 has carried them, possibly once for actual delivery.
