Chaucer" Subject Re Glencoe Morgan yacht Unfortunately a to good to be true bargain turned out to be untrue. I had placed my order via their web site, and then sent off notes to both SMML and SteelNavy to alert others of the "bargain," The next day, I received a very apologetic phone call from the Museum shop telling me that the price quoted on the website was an error and immediately offering to cancel the order if I was unhappy over the price. I elected to go with the order at the higher price in light of their openness and politeness in owning up to the error and I figured that if there was a few percent margin, at least the profit was going to a good cause. Regards, Bradford Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Will Noble" Subject Gearboxes Dear Friends Looking for some spare gearboxes – shaft-to-two propeller or shaft-to-four-propeller are the preferred items here (they usually come with kits that are capable of use as R/C, but which might be ‘surplus’ to some of you who aren’t ‘floatie-boaties’ like myself). Thanks for your help! Best, Will Noble Portland, OR ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Richa5011@aol.com Subject Problems scrapping warships today Saw this news item reagrding the old French carrier Clemenceau... Ex Warship Can't Pass Suez Canal CAIRO (Reuters) - A decommissioned French warship seeking to pass through the Suez Canal will have to return to France if Egypt does not receive details about any hazardous materials on board, an Egyptian official said on Saturday. The aircraft carrier Clemenceau left France in December for a ship-breaking yard in Gujarat, India, amid protests from environmental group Greenpeace, which says the ship contains tonnes of toxic waste that could harm the scrap workers. The French Defense Ministry said it was confident the ship would not have to return to France and said it had sent the necessary documents to Egypt. But the Egyptian official said Egypt had not yet been handed the required papers. Magdy Allam, deputy head of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, told Reuters the ship's captain had a choice "either to declare official documents approved by the French government or to return again to its original port." He did not give any deadline to receive the papers for the ship, which set sail from the French port of Toulon in December. "I don't think that (a return to Toulon) is the most probable hypothesis," French Defense Ministry spokesman Jean-Francois Bureau said. Greenpeace says the 27,000-tonne ship contains hundreds of tonnes of hazardous materials, including 500 tonnes of asbestos, which could pose a severe risk to scrap workers. "We are worried about the information that we received from Greenpeace," Allam said. A panel appointed by India's Supreme Court has recommended the vessel not be allowed to enter India because of toxic waste. French authorities have said the most dangerous work of removing 115 tonnes of brittle asbestos has been done in France and the remaining amount has to be kept in place to keep the ship seaworthy on its last journey to India. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Reviews, Articles, Backissues, Member's models & Reference Pictures at http//smmlonline.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
