Comments on this kit? << Doug, the following comes from Rajen's list, the closest we have to an official evaluation of ship kits >> N.S. Savannah (US Nuclear Merchant Vessel) [1/380] {H-366/5203/8622} (Mod) FH GOOD. Slightly larger and much more detailed than the Life-Like kit, and looks more like the actual ship. Detail is excellent; the reactor begs to be displayed as a separate diorama, and the main deck has the reinforcements for the breakwater molded in (although they are prone to breakage in old unbuilt issues). Best of all, the pilothouse is the right shape and size, and even has bridge windows that look right! After you saw the molded-in lifelines off and replace them with photoetch, reduce the size of the ports, and include a few standard tricks of the hobby, this kit becomes a real winner. Without question, the best of the Savannah kits. Reissued in the 1980s "History Makers" series as kit 8622. (JMP) Editor's Notes Apparently, it was originally issued as kit H-366 around 1958. Said to be about 18.5 inches long. << As for my experience, I agree that it's the best of the Savannah kits that have been offered over the years. She was a unique ship, and Revell captures more of those features than the other makers. Still, I'm putting a lot of extra detail into mine to make it appear like the prototype, using books on her, as well as the National Geographic photos. It's definitely worth getting, if you're into merchant ships (which I am). Cap'n Randy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Reid, John (AFIU)" Subject Revell missile fleet - what scale(s) Shane, Do you know what scale(s) this set is at? I couldn’t see squit detail on the cited website and I cannot find it on Revell’s either John Reid ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Reid, John (AFIU)" Subject Blasts from the past - wishes for 1/1200 If Revell are dusting off 50-year old moulds, does anyone know whether the following moulds still exist and could possibly be re-issued if there was enough obvious interest Renwal “US Fleet Set” – 2 collections each of six ships, one based around an SCB-27C carrier, the other around USS Canberra The ex-Eaglewall moulds purchased by Pyro? The ex-LifeLike moulds also purchased by Pyro? The rest of the Eaglewall moulds? All of these would also be e-Bay busters...recent selling prices for all of these in mint run into USD 50 or so, and MUCH more for rare kits, built examples less than that of course. John Reid ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "mkrumrey@frontiernet.net" Subject Re Revell Guided Missile Fleet set I always thought that as the Electra was reworked into the P-3, that Revell redid the molds of the Norton Sound to create the Sea Plane tender Pine Island. It would be neat if in fact the set was coming out. The price seems about right too. Mark Krumrey ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Jodie Peeler Subject Revell N/S Savannah kit hello all -- Doug Wilde wrote >> On page 6 of ships the nuclear-powered "Savannah" in 1/380 scale. Comments on this kit? << Easily the best kit out there of the Savannah. I'm not crazy about the decals, but the rest of the kit is excellent. It easily blows the old ITC and Adams/Life-Like kits out of the water. Here's my review from Rajen's List at http//www.quuxuum.org/rajens_list/shiprevs.html >> N.S. (JMP) << Get it while you can.... jodie ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Steve Singlar Subject Re Revell Guided Missile Fleet set hello all -- Are we talking warhips or guided missles? I'd be interested in building some of the ships from that time period again. Whatever happened to the old Renwal (spelling?) ship molds? They had a few interesting missile ship kits. Steve Pelham, NH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Gary Mansfield" Subject Guided Missile Ships Hi to the SMML Think Tank, With reference to the posts on Guided Missile ships. Does any body know or have the information on these ships? I have loads of detail on the Royal Navy missile ships, but the SUN seems to be a bit thin. I am looking for more detail on USS Albany (CA-123/CG-10). I have seen the web site on this ship. (No books, BUT CDs, T-Shirts, model JAG 1700 etc). Are there no books like the "Warship Perspective" series by Steve Wiper on Guided Missile ships like Bismarck HMS Hood? I have "Cruisers of the US Navy 1922-1962" by Stefan Terzibaschitsch (Very good in parts, some photos have the wrong captions, layout is poor, but I have being spoilt by "Japanese Cruisers of the Pacific War" by Eric LaCroix and others... Now that is the type of book I like, EVERYTHING on these Cruisers BUT photos small and poor in some cases, drawings very good! Everything you need to know, very good for the "Rivet Counters" at shows! Very thick and heavy! Can the SMML Think Tank help?
