Whatever happened to the old Renwal (spelling?) ship molds? They had a few interesting missile ship kits.m << Yes, they did, and I'd like to see some of them re-issued too. I'm quite certain that Revell got the old Renwal molds. It's less certain how many of them are still intact. We know that Revell has re-issued the light cruiser and the carrier. I'd like to see them issue the Coontz/Farragut destroyer, even though it's much closer to a Mitscher. If they'd just issue it with a second 5" gun, they could (and arguably should) re-issue it as a Mitscher. Unfortunately, around that time, a great many "classic" molds were cut up for scrap metal. I don't know whether the DLGs or the North Carolina-class battleships survive. Revell issued the Renwal Essex-class (SCB-125) mold under their "Advent" label once, but I don't know if that mold survives either. In the case of the carrier and the battleship, Revell management may have reasoned that they had their own molds, and scrapped the Renwal molds on the "not invented here" principle. We just don't know. "There seems to be something wrong | David R. Wells with our bloody ships today" | Adm. D. Beatty, May 31, 1916 | http//home.att.net/~WellsBrothers/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From David Wells Subject Re Blasts from the past - wishes for 1/1200 "Reid, John (AFIU)" >> If Revell are dusting off 50-year old moulds, does anyone know whether the following moulds still exist and could possibly be re-issued if there was enough obvious interest << The trick is, of course, "enough obvious interest". Assuming the molds still exist (significant assumption!) Revell would have to believe that the re-issues would be profitable. >> Renwal “US Fleet Set” 2 collections each of six ships, one based around an SCB-27C carrier, the other around USS Canberra << I actually suggested this to a Revell guy I met at a hobby show. One thing he told me is that most of Revell's ship releases are being handled by Revell-Germany now. He said he's pass the idea on to them. One point I made to the Revell guy was that they could check the sales data on their existing 1/1200 line, and judge for themselves whether or not it might be worth expanding the line. >> The ex-Eaglewall moulds purchased by Pyro? << Good question! Lindberg got most of Pyro's stuff, but I've never seen a re-issue by Lindberg. >> The ex-LifeLike moulds also purchased by Pyro? << Actually, it's the opposite. LifeLike re-issued many kits from Pyro molds before Lindberg got most of them. I have absolutely no data on whether or not Lindberg has the 1/1200 ship molds. >> The rest of the Eaglewall moulds? << Again, a REALLY good question. >> All of these would also be e-Bay busters...recent selling prices for all of these in mint run into USD 50 or so, and MUCH more for rare kits, built examples less than that of course. << Ultimately, what matters is how many thousand units they think they can sell. I've heard it said that it's hardly worth it to them to pull an old mold off the shelf if they can't sell many thousands of units. I know that they don't go by eBay prices. That just tells them how much the relatively small community of collectors is willing to pay. "There seems to be something wrong | David R. Wells with our bloody ships today" | Adm. D. I couldn’t see squit detail on the cited website and I cannot find it on Revell’s either << The Boston is about 1/480, the Norton Sound is about 1/400, and the Nautilus (worst of the bunch, IMHO) is about 1/312. Beatty, May 31, 1916 | http//home.att.net/~WellsBrothers/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Ouellette, Lawrence M" Subject Re Revell Guided Missile Fleet I'm glad I was wrong about the re-issue of the Guided Missile Fleet! John Reid asked about scales The 3 ships included, based on the old box top in the photo are the USS Boston, the USS Norton Sound, and the USS Nautilus. The Boston is 1/480 scale, converted Baltimore class cruiser with the 'square' stern. This kit has not been re-issued for many, many years. The Norton Sound is 1/400 scale, derived from the Pine Island kit (most recently issued.) This version of this kit (with the missiles) has not been re-issued for many, many years. The Nautilus (scale?) is that same piece of junk, um toy, they have re-issued many times over. I'll buy the set for the first two ships, and give away the Nautilus! John also asked about many of the old molds, as did Steve Singlar (HeySteve!) Revell bought many of the Renwal molds when Renwal went out of business, and some of the ship kits have been re-issued since. The Andrew Jackson SSBN issued by Revell-AG last year is the old Renwal kit. I think 1 or 2 of the Renwal cruisers may have been re-issued sometime in the 1980's. Everyone should bookmark http//www.quuxuum.org/rajens_list/shiprevs.html While nowhere near complete, 'the list' contains tons of information on many old (and new) kits that you just can't find anywhere else. Warning The entire list is a 1.4 Megabyte, single page of text, so it will take some time to load! We invite you to go to our site at http//www.navalandmilitarymuseum.org/resource_pages/id_project/id_project_1.html and see if you can identify some of the ships depicted there. If you do respond to the web master please include the Visual Record (VR) number so we can keep track of the comments. We've also included a few pages for those ships that have been identified to date. These will only be up for a few days but we thought you might be interested in what the consensus was for some of these photos. I have to say we are getting amazing results thanks to the cooperation of those on this venue. We never would have been able to do what you people have done in a few weeks. Thanks for your help and we hope to hear from you in the future. Paul O'Reilly ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Paul Giltz" Subject Ship articles in magazines Does anyone on the list happen to have copies of these two magazines. SHIPS IN SCALE #5, May/June 1984 - this had an article on the SS President Hoover starting on page 44. MODEL SHIP BUILDER #40 , March/April of 1986. This had an article on the Hog Island class of freighters built in the US for WWI and conpleted just after. I'd like to know if these articles had plans for the ships.
