If they don't have them I am sure they may be able to help and they do have nice web sight. DON That Portland Rustbucket ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Will Noble" Subject DuPont (Krylon) primer From "Leslie D. Foran" >> In response to my earlier post on working with PE, Tom Ruprecht asked what specific DuPont primer I was referring to. The stuff was Krylon spray primer. It comes in light gray, dark gray, and a nice red-brown that works real well for hull bottoms. I have been told that this primer, unlike many others, does not contain filler. My experience using this on PE parts seems to bear this out. As long as it is lightly applied (misted on) I have not had a problem with it clogging PE parts such as radar dishes and safety netting. I also find that a light coat of this primer on plastic parts helps acrylic paint to adhere. I have had problems with acrylics scratching easily on parts not primed. Another advantage that Krylon has is that it dries more quickly than most other brands. << Folks This topic intrigues me, inasmuch as priming plastic parts is the basis for a good finish overall - and I've never found a primer that really WORKED. It's really as simple as Krylon? I'll have to try it - -but first, some questions 1. What about the mist from the spray cans? I've never found anything that equals my trusty Badger airbrush. 2. Don't spray cans have the tendency to 'load' a target? 3. Is there a means of buying Krylon primer in cans (I know, it would be asking too much if they made it in 1oz bottles!) that you've found? 4. Do you use it for everything, or just PE? Cheers! Carlos Villasenor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Richa5011@aol.com Subject Anybody want an old aircraft carrier?...Cheap!!!! Saw this in the news today Chirac orders "toxic" ship home French President Jacques Chirac has ordered the asbestos-lined warship Clemenceau to return to French waters after a ruling by the highest court. The court had demanded an end to the transfer of the decommissioned warship to a breaking yard in India after complaints from environmentalists. Greenpeace and three anti-asbestos groups said the ship was an environmental and health hazard. The ship is in the Arabian Sea after India refused entry to its waters. India said it wanted more information before allowing the decommissioned aircraft carrier to enter its waters. A statement from Mr Chirac's office said "The president has decided to put this ship in French waters on a position of standby which offers all security guarantees until a definitive solution for its dismantling is found." Greenpeace welcomed the decision as a "victory for Indian workers" and those who work in ship-breaking. Yannick Jadot, director of campaigns for Greenpeace France, said it was a victory for the protection of the fundamental rights of the individual and the environment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From LymanJohnF@aol.com Subject Tamiya 1/700 HOOD plus destroyer; Revell 1/720 ARK ROYAL plus destroyer I have seen ad listings, but no box cover or kit photos, for a new version of the old Tamiya 1/700 waterline kit of HMS HOOD. The new kit is titled HMS HOOD and E-class Destroyer. Has anyone held this kit in their hands yet? Have there been any reviews? Is the HOOD the same casting as before? Is it really an E-class destroyer of the 1930-1939 A to I series? Separate question does anyone produce a dedicated photo-etch fret for the Revell 1/720 combined kit of HMS ARK ROYAL and Tribal-class Destroyer? John F. Lyman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Tim Perry" Subject Re DuPont Filler British equivalent Brit modellers remember that the best aerosol filler paints ON THE PLANET (OK, I might be getting a bit over-excited here....) are the plastic primer paints available in your local Halfords shop. Grey, black, Oxide Red, and a filler version in ochre too. They do primers for metal too, obviously! I plan to review it (here, on Amazon and elsewhere) as soon as I can, but for modelers, this is a fascinating book. It doesn't break any new ground on the Yorktowns, but it offers some interesting detailed photos - and shots of some of the most fantastic ship models I've seen. That both motivates and challenges me, and it may you, too. Ned ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From GORDONBUT@aol.com Subject Re transport Guerrero to ED Bertschy Try the Dock Museum Barrow on www.dockmusenm.org.uk and also the Cumbria Records Office (Barrow), 140 Duke St, Barrow in Furnace, Cumbria, LA14 1XW They have a lot of Vickers armament and ship drawingsfrom 1885 Gordon Buttress Archvist to SWA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From Subject Re Need Help Finding Plans Ed Bertshy asks about finding plans for the cruiser transport 'General Guerrero'. All the plans for ships built at Vickers and its predecessors at Barrow-in-Furness were passed to the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich in England. This information I obtained from the Dock Museum at Barrow. I can't find the precise web-site address of the Dock Museum in my records, but it can be found by search. This museum has an archive of photographs of Barrow-built ships, accessible on-line. The NMM general web-site is http//www.nmm.ac.uk .The Historic Photos/Ship Plans department e-mail address is plansandphotos@nmm.ac.uk . When I last had contact with them in 2004, the Curator of this department was Jeremy Mitchell. NMM-held plans are often extensive and can include interior layouts as well as the (exterior) draughts and profiles and plans. If you are interested only in making a model, or of recording the exterior appearance, I would advise saying so in any correspondence. In this way, you need not pay for plans which deal with interior structure and machinery. I have found their staff helpful in advising which of a set of plan reproductions would be necessary for the objective in mind. This caution is because the plans service is expensive. I believe that they will still reduce the originals to a copy at any scale you desire, at no extra cost. For a ship I was to model, I had them reduce from 1/48 scale to 1/96, with spot-on results. Plans of the era of interest to Ed (at least for Royal Navy ships) were very detailed. Captions were commonly in a sort of 'copper-plate' script; I suggest that a reduction to less than 1/96 would risk making the script unintelligible. Note that, as the department's title describes, they also have archives of ship photos. Brian Taylor ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "LES ROGERS" Subject N.Z. Visit To NZ friends I will be visiting the South Island in the first 3 weeks of March and would like to know where to find Model shops or any modeling activities that may be happening during that time.I am driving around the Island. Regards Les Rogers Aus ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From "Christopher & Kayo" Subject HMS Nizam >> Actually I think it only fair to make my judgement on the kit when I see it, not from photos on a website. << You are incorrect in your supposition. The photos are presented by the company to highlight their product not by an independent agency. They are integrated with copies of the plans and a photo of the etched brass. The photos are numerous enough and detailed enought to allow an accurate evaluation of the model. Examing the package the company presents one sees some inaccuracies. Maybe this is not the final version but it is the one the company has chosen to highlight. Thus all current judgements must be based on the available evidence. It may be that as you say the company will correct the errors in which case we can change the evaluation. Until and if this happens we must assume that this is the version the company wishes to treat as final. As currently presented the model does not offer any real improvement over the White Ensign version and in some ways is worse. It is perfectly fair to judge a company by what it wishes to offer as illustration of its models.
