RANGER supported the North Africa landings in November '42, but stayed in the Atlantic. As a sidebar, the tanker OHIO of the Pedestal convoy to Malta is commonly referred to as "USS" but she was not. OHIO was a brand-new, US-owned merchant tanker, under charter to a British company (whose name escapes me but was the same company that owned the SAN DEMETRIO of JERVIS BAY/ADMIRAL SCHEER association), and manned by British sailors under the Red Ensign; she is properly designated as "SS" for steam ship. She was chosen for the Malta run because she was large and comparatively fast; in the event her sturdy construction was her most valuable feature; the voyage to Malta was, I believe, her only commercial voyage as she broke apart at her mooring while being unloaded. John F. Lyman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Roland Mar Subject US CV's other than WASP in the Med G'day George, This might be of help. RANGER [CV-4] from '42-'44 operated in the Med frequently, supporting American landings in North Africa and ferrying aircraft back and forth. Here is the entry from Dictionary of American Fighting Ships that details her war career. That should give you the dates, location, and what deck load she was carrying as a start if you want to model her. http//www.hazegray.org/danfs/carriers/cv4.htm Hope this helps. Roland Mar ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "John Snyder" Subject Re USS Wasp USS Ranger also operated in the Med during Operation Torch, and a light carrier or two as well. Best regards, John Snyder White Ensign Models http//WhiteEnsignModels.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Gary Subject Bagley-class destroyer Hi everyone, Currently working on the Midship Bagley-class destroyer. Building her as USS Ralph Talbot as she appeared at Guadalcanal. The kit depicts the midship structure (referred to as a torpedo workshop in my references) as a single level but all the pics I've been able to find (the usual sources online) show a two level structure at the 'canal. It's very hard to make out but it appears as though the bottom level is an octagon shape while the second level is a bit squared off. There also seems to be large windows(?) and awnings(?). If anybody has any details I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks. Gary Schurr ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From John Reid Subject Whitehead's torpedo Can anyone suggest a source for a relatively detailed illustration or drawing of the Whitehead 14-inch torpedo in use with the RN circa 1885? I've Googled until I'm goggle-eyed with no luck; there is plenty of written data but no drawing, at least that I've been able to find. I would be grateful for any and all tips or leads. If anyone has a drawing that needs to be copied, of course I'll reimburse all expenses. Thanks, in advance, for any help you can provide. John Reid ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Rod" Subject Starfighter decals Has anybody ever heard of Starfighter decals? There's an Ebay seller who has aftermarket decals for Revell 1/540 modernized Essex carriers. I'm wondering if they're any good???
