Now unless we want to spend up to 2 hours a day just sending out SMML we have to find a new server which will allow the large volume that SMML has. Whilst we hunt up new servers that can handle the volume and do price checking etc, we will be migrating the list to yahoo groups for a short period. We apologise in advance for the yahoo advertising that this will put you all through but there's no real option at the moment. The plus side is that all those who wish to can get individual posts rather than the digest format. It will also free up our time to concentrate more on the website side of SMML and to clear the backlog that has backed up - our apologies to all the contributors who are waiting (im?)patiently for their stuff to be posted. Those subscribers who already take part in yahoo groups can add SMML to their groups. I will be sending invites to join the "new" list (tis only 8 years old ;-) ) over the next few hours. To visit the yahoo SMML, go to http//groups.yahoo.com/group/smmlonline/ Post message smmlonline@yahoogroups.com Subscribe smmlonline-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Unsubscribe smmlonline-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com List owner smmlonline-owner@yahoogroups.com At this stage the posts will still be have to approved before posting to the list, but we hope to do away with that once things settle down. Only members will be able to post to reduce spam. If you have any queries, this email account will still be active so we can hopefully help out with any problems. Well that about covers it for the moment. All the best, Shane & Lorna ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MODELLERS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From LymanJohnF@aol.com Subject USN carriers in the Med, WW2 Notwithstanding the other submissions to Vol.3091, I stand by my assertion that RANGER never entered the Med during WW2. Her DANFS entry confirms she operated off, and later entered, Casablanca, during and subsequent to Operation Torch, but my atlas indicates Casablanca is on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. RANGER also made two ferry voyages with USAAF aircraft to Accra, which is way around the Atlantic hump of Africa, in Ghana, barely six degrees above the Equator. John F. Lyman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From SANDYMOOR@aol.com Subject Re Starfighter decals Hi Rod, I've seen Starfighter decals and they are very good quality. Starfighter makes decals for 1/500 type model ships, HO slot cars, and Sci-Fi subjects. They also make custom decals to your specs. Their email is- StarfighterDecals@Verizon.net Regards, Sandy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Donsrcships@wmconnect.com Subject paint stripper GOOD Morning all. Hope all of you are doing good. OK I know we have talk about this in the pass but I have been trying something new for stripping old paint. I was told about a month ago try Westleys bleche -white tire cleaner. I was looking for something that was easy to use and safe to use here in my shop. What I found out it works just grate. I have been using it for about a month. I have strip a few old models and it takes it all the way down to model plastic depending on how long you soak it. I have found out one thing for sure use a good set of rubber gloves for if you don't your hands will stay slick until you get it off completely. It works, but it can take a little wile depending on how long the old paint has been on your model. YOU use it just like if you were cleaning your car tires on your real rigs. I use it 100 percent you can add water to it if you want to. YOU pore it into a container that you can seal the lid down tight something like with a snap lid. Let the the model sit over night and check it out. FOR me it works good and I don't have any problems at least with what I do. I left a kit in my soak tank for over night with paint that use that day and in the morning I took it out. Then took it over to my washing sink with a tooth brush with warm water and took the paint off. Then put in a kit that had paint on for about a week waited a couple of days and it came off as well. The longer you leave the model in the better it will work at least from what I have learn. I use about a 1/2 gallon that comes in a small container. Then poor it into a plastic container with a snap lid so no air will get in. THEN completely submerge the kit or what ever I want to strip the paint off. So far I have use only plastic not sure on how it will work for other things. I have been able to strip off what ever I wanted to without any problems. IT just take's a little time. I have use other strippers and so far me it has work the best. IT dose not bother glue on parts but one thing it will do. it will strip off any chrome parts that you put in. I found that out one morning The hard way. So any way I thought I would pass this along to others. FOR ME I am 100 percent happy just be sure to wash it off completely with soap and water and dry it off completely Then the rest will be up to you on what you do. It has very little smell and that was one thing I was looking for. I do keep a window open when I am cleaning for air to come in. I Hope it will work for others like it has for me but like everything elest read all of the information on back of the container and use safety glasses and rubber gloves and be careful and take your time. DON that Portland Rustbucket ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Charles Stephanian" Subject Best cut-away Sub Kit? I'm interested in building a cutaway sub model...something I've never done...and to top it off, I'm mostly a model car builder so I'm not very familiar with what kits would fit the bill. The kit doesn't have to currently be in production...I don't mind looking. I'd just like to hear what folks have to say about which kit might be best (or offer the most potential). Although I haven't built but a few ships, I have been modeling for a long time, so I'm not afraid to tackle a kit with a few challenges. Thanks all! Charles ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Reid, John (AFIU)" Subject Whitehead torpedos - search for plans In 1885 Whitehead were still operating in Fiume, then newly part of Italy, and their products were used also by the Royal Italian Navy. I would imagine that same calibre, about same date, will be about the same weapon (even if the buyers were not told this at the time). IIRC, the Naval Museum at La Spezia *has* such a torpedo in its collection, though its site http//www.laspezia.net/navale/welcome.html does not mention any specifics. If anyone knows the collection better than I do, I’d appreciate confirmation of this. The Museum at Venice has a much better site http//www.marina.difesa.it/venezia/index.htm from which it is pretty clear that they do not have such a thing. I have no idea how responsive either institution would be to a letter asking their plans library for a look. By the way, Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquea (WASS) still perpetuates the name. Their site concentrates on tomorrow not yesterday, though. Can anyone on the list give me an idea of colors and their closest equivalents in readily available paints (WEM Colourcoats, Gunze, Tamiya, Testors, etc.). Thanks in advance. Michael Zimmerman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From Don Subject WWII Merchant Ship Armament To the knowledgeable list members Two part post 1. I am interested in locating sources for drawings of 5"/38, 3"/50, and 20M/M guns as installed on C2 merchant ships during WWII. A recurring note in Armed Guard Commanders voyage reports indicates the 3"50 was a Mark X #1807 gun dated 1919 with "slowness to return to battery limits" and notes repeated requests for replacement for a newer mount. I have copies of the Smithsonian generic C2 Moore built drawings and attempting to learn more details of her configuration as SS Great Republic. Also interested in hearing from any C2-S-B1(R) folks vintage WWII or people with information on C2 cargo ships. Picture sources welcome. 2. Has anyone had experience with professional researchers and can give some thoughts here? Again, main interest is images, Navy ship command histories, CO command photographs, and CO biographies. As these may not be direct ship modelling topics, please contact me off list as appropriate. Thanks in advance, Don ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From beyondsun@mindspring.com Subject Early Whitehead Torpedo Hi John, When looking for anything graphic, you need to go straight to Google Images. Check out these hits for "whitehead torpedo" http//images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=whitehead+torpedo&btnG=Search I didn't investigate them in detail, but it looked like a lot of early torpedoes, including line drawings of 'em. Hope this helps, buddy. This is the most interesting, a small cargo ship, N3-S-A2, built in 1945 for the Maritime Commission. If the plans were not $100 a set I'd try to buy them all. At any rate, go take a look at how ships blueprints were drawn in several countries back then.
