At any rate, the naval museum has added more photos to its Mystery Ship Project page. So if you're inclined to help out go there (http//www.navalandmilitarymuseum.org/resource_pages/id_project/id_pro ject_1.html) and have a look around. Post replies to the webmaster and not to me as I'll be away for a few weeks and won't always have access to Internet facilities. Thanks for your help. We're making good progress and it looks like we'll be busy updating our photo files because of your excellent efforts. Paul O'Reilly ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Bradford Chaucer Subject Proposed tour of ACW Naval sites I received the following from Mr PC Coker of Charleston S.C. I am sure that many of you will recognize the name of both a long time premier model ship builder and author, and an expert on warships of the Confederate States Navy. This sounds like a unique opportunity. I am planning a one week tour by bus of Confederate Naval sites and museums from Wilmington (and Kinston), NC to Charleston, SC; Savannah, GA; Columbus, GA; and ending in Mobile, AL. The cost estimates per person are $1500 to $2000 to include transportation, lodging, meals, and admissions. Participants will have to get to Wilmington and home from Mobile. If enough persons sign up I can line it up for this October, otherwise it will be October 2007. Anyone interested please contact me by return e-mail at cokerre@yahoo.com. PC Coker And as further amplification As a little background the INRO has been doing maritime tours every five to seven years, mostly to Europe. I tried to interest them in one of the SE to tour Confederate museums and sites but could not generate any interest. Last June (2005) I went on the INRO tour of England to coincide with the international naval review at Portsmouth on June 28. I went cold turkey, ie. did not know a soul on the trip. My wife is not interested in ships and refused to go. It was fantastic, a great group of people, all serious ship enthusiasts. We spent ten days going from Hartlepool to Liverpool, Bristol, London, and Portsmouth and places in between. All of it was to visit restored ships, maritime museums, etc. We traveled on a bus with a driver/guide. While the guide was not versed in maritime matters, he was delightful with great stories. Our saving grace was that he picked us up at the airport and knew his way around where we had to go and deposited us back at the airport at the end of the tour. What I want to do is pattern the SE tour after the INRO tour but have local experts greet and talk to the group about their area of expertise on Confederate Naval history. There are a couple of private collectors who should be able to host us as we tour their collection. Would love to have your input. PC Coker Regards, Bradford J. Chaucer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Bradford Chaucer Subject Bus Tour Redux I received the following in response to my suggestion to Mr. Coker that he consider departing and returning to the same location to simplify people getting to and from the tour. Hi, I don't see much of a problem with starting and ending in Charleston if that is what people want as that is where I am located. It is quite a drive from Mobile to Wilmington. Charleston is 3 hours from Wilmington and I know Atlanta is 5 hours from Charleston with Mobile another 3 to 4 beyond Atlanta so we are talking a good days drive to get from Mobile to Wilmington. Nothing is set in stone at this point so I am open to suggestions. PC Coker Regards, Bradford J.
