The collection catalog comes in three volumes. The first covers the Maritime Administration Collection of Ship Plans (1939-1970) The collection includes a variety of plans for Liberty ships (in each of their configurations -- dry transport, collier, takner and airplane transport), Victory ships, tugboats, aux aircraft carriers and the detailed plans for the USS United States. The second catalog includes the Smithsonian Catalog of Warship Plans. This one includes both warship plans and ordinance drawings, as well as photographs of ship models. The heard of the collection is the Howard I Chapelle plan collection, and focus on the warships during the age of sail. Most of the plans were reproduced in Chapelle's book "The History of the American Sailing Navy." This is a huge collection of plans, and cludes Well known ships such as the Rattlsnake, The CSNS Alabama, the ironclad Cairo and the lake brig Oneida. Most plans are drawn at 1/4 scale. The third (and largest) set are the museum's own Ship Plans List. This collection is based on the Historica American Merchant Marine Survey (HAMMS), which was conducted by the WPA in the 1930's. The survey itself examined 426 different actual vessels or builders half models, producing both plans and photographs of these ships. The collection has been enhanced several times through the addition of other, private plans collections, including those from Harry V Sucher's Simplified Boatbuilding books, the Maxwell Blake Collection of Drawaings of Far East watercraft, and a collection of plans of commercial fishing vessels buildt between 1918 and 1928. Most recently, the library has been expanded again by the inclusion of plans from the library of the late Merritt Edson, one-time editor of the Nautical Research Journal. The three sets of plans consitute a truly massive collection, and are available as reproductions from the Smithsonian. Unfortunately, the organization is chronically understaffed, so they they only respond to requests by (snail) mail. For information on how to obtain a copy of the plans catalogs, check their website at http//americanhistory.si.edu/csr/shipplan.htm. Calling Ed Arnold..if you're still out there, could you email me please? Thanks much, Terry Sumner ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Terry Sumner" Subject Replensihment at sea ships Hi All, I have obtained the plans from the Floating Drydock of a replensihment ship. What I need now are more sources of photos of these ships. My long range plan is to scratchbuild a 350th scale ship to put in up alongside my Enterprise. Anyone know of any sources of photos besides the Navy sites where these photos may be had? Any books out there featuring these ships? Thanks in advance, Terry Sumner ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Keith Butterley Subject warshipbooks.com c'est finis Attention customers! KB ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Sell4853@aol.com Subject WELFREIGHTER MINATURE SUBMARINE PROJECT Does anyone have any photos or information about the welfreighter class of minature submarines. The Welfreighter was a 37ft miniature submarine developed during World War 2 by the British Special Operations Executive. Classified top secret for over 50 years, it is only in recent years that Government files detailing the existence of this project have been opened for research. The craft was intended to provide an alternative method for the clandestine insertion and re-supply of agents behind enemy lines. It could also have been a useful asset for the gathering of coastal intelligence, transporting Special Forces personnel on raiding and sabotage operations, and possibly for the delivery and deployment of mines in enemy held ports, and coastal waters. It was to be capable of a payload of aprox 2 ton of cargo and a crew of four. It would be an interesting concept for a model especially for R/C Anyone out there with any knowledge to help? I only became aware of this craft as a result of family history research Norman SELLS Tenterden UK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From beyondsun@mindspring.com Subject Re WELFREIGHTER MINATURE SUBMARINE PROJECT Norman, I was surprised also, when I read about the WellFreighter - as well as the Wellman Submarine and Submersible Boat (aka "Sleeping Beauty") minisubs, in Lynne Cairns' "Freemantle's Secret Fleets"; a softcover book I picked up in "Freo" Western Australia, when I visited there in 1999. It doesn't say much - has a rare picture or two - but (maybe) significantly that, "In March 1942, the Services Reconnaissance Department established its Z Special Unit (Z-Force), and a camp was set up at Cairns, Queensland...(and)...In Western Australia, the Force Z training camp was at Careening Bay, on Garden Island." (pp.33-34) Apparently they engaged in a number of exploits in the Pacific War; you might want to google "Z-Force" and "Services Reconnaissance Department" as a way to get at the Wellmans...
