Hi all, Ok, I don't now need any digests as yahoo just sent Digest 25 with 13 days worth of posts in it. That would also possibly expain why some people haven't been getting posts. I ask you bear with this situation until I can find a better mail hosting solution with a proper Mailing List Manager (such as Mailman). In the meantime any feedback on the move to Yahoo would always be appreciated. All the best Shane - settling into new premises and trying hard to get everthing unpacked and not to upset the MiL too much ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Ned Barnett Subject 1/72 figures To all who are looking for figures for 1/72 scale, a few options. 1. Prieser from Germany has excellent figures - I mean, really excellent - and in that scale, they are not difficult to modify. A sharp knife, sandpaper and files, and ... (wait for it) ... white glue are all you need. Yeah, white glue. I've been using white glue to sculpt folds in clothes on figures for going on 30 years now, no problemo. And if you make a mistake, it cleans up with water. Prieser may even make nautical figures (the last ones I bought were Luftwaffe crew and ground-crew, and - wow), they make a lot of WW-II era figures. Squadron Shop has that Luftwaffe set in stock for under $14 USD - I'm sure other places have even more. 2. Model railroad HO figures (1/87) can be used for either "forced perspective" or to give a human scale to things. Not all RCN crewmen were 5' 9" tall (don't know what that comes to in metrics - probably 17 furlongs - but you get the picture), and by putting a real 1/72 crewman next to an HO crewman, you get a "Mutt and Jeff" view that makes them all look more human. Prieser makes RR figures, as does Woodland Scenic (the latter come pre-painted, but probably not in RCN uniform colors), and the set of poses is remarkably varied. They have, for instance, a house-painting crew that offers remarkable potential for a repair-and-upkeep vignette in some out-of-the-way corner of the ship (some poor apprentice-seaman was always chipping rust and slapping on paint in every Navy I've ever seen). 3. If you're willing to part with a bit more jack, you can find 199 total listings for 1/72 figures at Squadron alone (http//www.squadron.com) - the first two are two sets of U-Boat crewmen - together, the two sets run to about $55 USD (these are fine models in their own right), but if you put them in prominent places (re-sculpted uniforms, of course, though great-coats and pea coats look the same in every language) it will upgrade all the other figures lost in the background. Czech Master has a long list of figure sets at Squadron, including RAF crewmen and mechanics (surely something there for you) and six sets of U-Boat crews and an S-Boot deck crew, all at about $6 USD a set. Hope that helps. Ned ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From beyondsun@mindspring.com Subject Re Maquette 1/400 Russian subs and ships Hi Harold, The Maquette kits are about the same, maybe the fit a little poorer (IMHO), in some cases. Except for a couple special cases (below). Niether have very crisp detail - but if Mirage is good enough for you, then I guess these will be, too. (I've heard Mirage subs come with PE - but not any of the ones I have.) The Maquette "special cases" include their 1/400 Kilo-class sub; totally inaccurate hullform - complete shite. Their Arktika icebreaker, on the other hand, is not too bad - maybe slightly on the heavy side (think some of the better Lindbergs). Also their cruiser Aurora looks not too bad of a kit at all. I haven't seen their Potemkin. Or did you mean SS United States? Sorry for the confusion, Larry. They are for the SS United States -- the cruise liner that is rotting away in Philadelphia, or was the last I saw her. Greg, I am not certain, but I SUSPECT that thes plans might be available from The Mariners' Museum in Newport News. I believe that at least some of the older, unclassified Newport News historical files are now housed there. You could check with the librarian there. Check http//www.mariner.org/. Vince McCullough ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Mccullough, Vincent" Subject Re ship plans newport news shipbuilding Sorry, I shound have checked this before I sent my earlier message. According to the musuem's online catalog, they have a set of plans identified as Title Specifications for the construction of a passenger and freight ship and of a duplicate ship for the Clyde Steamship Company, New York and Miami Steamship Corporation / Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. Author Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. A catalog note says "ompleted vessel named SS Iroquois and SS Shawnee." Looks like paydirt. Vince McCullough ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Joe Hinds" Subject Re Missing SMML Digests What is with this Yahoo thing. I used to get post on a daily basis that were no problem. Now I get nothing. Actually for my money, Yahoo is a pain in the butt. Goog luck. They operate like FEMA. Can you please send again. United States is not, and never was, a cruise liner. She was built specifically for the Transatlantic run.
