SMML History

SMML is a forum for ship modellers to get together in a flame free environment. Started by Greg Lee in Nov. 1997 and moderated by Shane Jenkins since December 1998, it has evolved into one of the premier ship lists for steel ship modelling. The original web-site was given a thorough overhaul by Mike Dunn, culminating in it's current look on Christmas Eve 2000. In May 2001 the site moved and acquired a new domain name in order to keep expanding.

SMML is a moderated, daily (it's put out each night in Australia), free email list. It is not an automated mailing list: subscribers email their posts to the Listmaster and they are compiled into one email, removing any spam and any OTT flaming before distribution to the subscribers. While this may be thought to impair "free speech", it is designed so that people don't have to wade through invective posts. In regards to flaming, SMML is mainly flame free: however it would be extremely difficult to have a completely flame free list. People see things in a different light around the world.

The SMML subscriber base includes authors, magazine editors, artists, historians, manufacturers and, of course, modellers. As such, SMML is not affiliated with any manufacturer, website or magazine and is totally independent. It is here for ship modellers around the world.

We encourage the various model clubs, manufacturers, magazine editors etc around the world to post to the list as a means of keeping the subscriber base informed about what is happening in the ship modelling world.

SMML supports the aims of model clubs around the world, which is a good thing, especially as the Listmaster is the Webmaster and Asst Editor of one ;-)).

Now to the thorny subject of what is On Topic; anything that relates to ship modelling - whether it be an obscure piece of maritime history, kit recommendations, construction techniques, to what scheme did HMAS Sydney wear. SMML does support friendly banter between members, but asks that subscribers don't go too overboard.
