United States Coast Guard Cutter Campbell
Revell 1/300

By: Stephen Allen

The USCG Campbell was one of seven 327' Cutters built for the Coast Guard in the 1930s. After service as a convoy escort and amphibious command flagship in the second world war, Campbell was rearmed in the late 1940s as part of a general program to re-equip USN and USCG craft to deal with the perceived threat of a growing Soviet submarine force..

The model depicts Campbell at the beginning of the 1950s, equipped with a heavy anti-submarine armament. The white and buff colour scheme is traditional for the Coast Guard, while small hull numbers were carried fore and aft at this time in Campbell's service. The cutter is shown with national and coast guard ensigns hoisted at main and foremast, indicating that the cutter is under way. The signal flags flying from the starboard yardarm spell out Campbell's radio call sign - N R D C - which is also carried across the top of the balloon shelter aft of the funnel.

The painting of armament and directors black, including the depth charge rails, was characteristic of USCG Cutters during the 1950s. All rigid pipe railings are painted white, while the flexible bronze wire rope railings used at weather deck level weathered to a dull bronze green colour.
