AMA - Almada's Modeling Association
Naval Museum Display 2003

Photos submitted by Rui Matos (aka Skipper)

I'm sending you this photo report of our club's (AMA - Almada's Modeling Association) last event, in co-operation with Almada's Naval Museum - Museu Naval do Olho de Boi. This work happened after those responsible for the Naval Museum visited our annual expo, held in May, and realised that there were so many visitors, in a such short period of time (our expo only lasts three days, Friday to Sunday and this year we achieved 2145 visitors). So we were invited for a co-work, in which we bring some models (only naval theme, of course) and provide modelers for "live work" during weekends, making the exhibition more interesting for the visitor. This was the start for "1º Salão de Modelismo Estático - Museu Naval do Olho de Boi - Almada - Portugal" - roughly translated to: First Static Model Sallon - Naval Museum Olho de Boi - Almada - Portugal.
All in all, there were 115 models (from 1/1250 scale scratchbuilt balsa fleet to 1/12 Typical Tagus River Boats), from different mediums: Wood, Plastic, Resin and Paper, stock and scratchbuild, from our members, friends and of the Museum collection too.
We had a precious help from our Navy (the club president is a Naval Officer, so it was relatively easy....) with one model, some boards with pictorial description on how is made the maintenance of our subs and a real Periscope of NRP Albacora (Daphne Class). Also of remark were the models of 1940's famous Portuguese movie actor - Ribeirinho and of the person (also an actor) who keep them today, Octavio de Matos [I'm not a relative :-) ]. Visitors were surprised with this other skill from them...
Since of the 128 members of AMA, only a handfull of us make ship models, there we were during four weekends, in the waterfront of the city, enjoying the good weather and working a lot (I was able to (only during those weekends) to finish USS Skipjack and a Akula - they were test beds for the weathering that I am making on a 1/35 Sidney Attack Harbour Ko-Hyoteki) and having a lot of fun!! The entrance was free of charge (as is our expo) and we received 1054 visitors, during a typical summer vacation month - a good achievement.
Also of remark, two visitors: - A blind Gentleman "seeing" the models that were on "open air" (without a display case), the others beeing heavily descripted by his wife and son - nothing was broken in the process!!!! - and an Aussie visitor, from the Sydney area (His name was Ron), which I toured myself, since all the model descriptions where Portuguese written, showing and telling the history of the models that were displayed.
Hope you like them too.... There are more pictures on our Club website: www.ama.online.pt
