The SS Jeremiah O'Brien is one of 2,751 Liberty Ships constructed during World War II. She is the only example of this class to survive in original configuration (the John W. Brown was converted to a troopship). She was built in 1943, taking only 56 days to complete. The O'Brien saw service in both the Atlantic and Pacific, and she participated in the Normandy invasion as well. Placed in reserve in 1946, the Jeremiah O'Brien was reactivated to become a museum in San Francisco. In 1979 the O'Brien sailed out of the reserve fleet under her own power.

In 1994 the O'Brien's volunteer crew took her back to Normandy for the 50th anniversary of D-Day. In order to make this trip possible the ship had to be recertified, and modern safety equipment needed to be located and installed. The ship was 50 years old, and the average age of her crew was over 70, yet the O'Brien amazed everyone by consistently arriving at her ports of call ahead of schedule.

The Jeremiah O'Brien's volunteer crew operates her reciprocating steam engine once a month, and she offers San Francisco Bay cruises twice a year. For more information on the ship visit her website at:
