The SS Jeremiah O'Brien is one of 2,751 Liberty Ships constructed
during World War II. She is the only example of this class to survive
in original configuration (the John W. Brown was converted to a troopship).
She was built in 1943, taking only 56 days to complete. The O'Brien
saw service in both the Atlantic and Pacific, and she participated in
the Normandy invasion as well. Placed in reserve in 1946, the Jeremiah
O'Brien was reactivated to become a museum in San Francisco. In 1979
the O'Brien sailed out of the reserve fleet under her own power. |
