RAN Museum
Spectacle Island, Sydney Harbour
By: Shane & Lorna Jenkins
Spectacle Island in Sydney Harbour is the RAN's depository for all items from RAN ships that have been decommisioned. Within its small bounds, lays a treasure trove of naval artifacts dating back to the middle of the 19th century. Originally set up as an ammunition depot, it is now filled to brim with items of historical relevance. From tea sets to ships bells to weaponry.
Spectacle Island is not open to the public, however tours can be arranged by organisations such as the Australian Naval Historical Society, Maritime Museum, etc for their members. If you're in Sydney and a member of such organisations and a trip is planned, I urge you to take the opportunity - it's well worth your while.
We hope you enjoy the small sampling of shots below.
