After looking around for references on the Royal Australian
Navy (RAN) Q class Destroyers and not having much luck, it was with
a definite thrill that I found this book by Trevor Weaver, published
by the Naval Historical Society of Australia. Trevor has interviewed
the people who served in the ships as well as making use of various
journals, diaries and archives to produce a good historical record on
these ships.
This book covers in detail the careers of the RAN Q's - HMAS Quiberon and Quickmatch during WW2, HMAS Quiberon Quickmatch, Quality, Quadrant and Queenborough after WW2. Containing over 80 general photos of the class, it also goes through their conversion to Type 15 ASW frigates (except for HMAS Quality which was paid off shortly after transfer to the RAN). The RAN/RN Q class served with distinction during WW2 amassing a laudable collection of battle honours. After WW2, 3 of the surviving 4 Q class Destroyers were transferred to the RAN in place of the N class Destroyers. They served the RAN well up to1972, when HMAS Queenborough (which had been converted to a training ship) was paid off. |
This book is mainly a historical record of the ships in RAN service - where they went and what they did. It only touches briefly on the service of the RN Q's during WW2. While not covering in fine detail the modifications in service that occured eg: colour schemes, weapons etc (as the Profile and Ensign/Man o War series do), it does give the reader a feel for what life was like serving on these ships. With that in mind, I can heartily recommend this book. It fills in part of the gap for modellers and provides a basis for anyone interested in modelling the Q class DD and FF. Links: |
