Plastic Ship Modeler Issue 25
By: Shane Jenkins
The latest Plastic Ship Modeller sees a welcome return to colour
covers featuring a drawing of the USS Dolphin by Dan Jones on the front cover
and Chris Drage's JW58 diorama on the back. This is a nice step forward for
PSM and it is to be hoped it can continue.
This issue contains the usual reviews sections of kits, photoetch and books
with Paul Jacobs' One to One Hundred column and Ray Bean's Navinfotel coloumn.
Paul Reilly begins a two part article on building the 1/350 Tamiya USS Fletcher
with Flagship Models and Gold Medal Models additions. Paul's aim is to complement
other articles on the Fletcher and he achieves this neatly.
Pre-WW1 naval modelling gets a decent look-in this time around with Falk Pletscher's
article on the Seal Models 1/700 IJN Mikasa and Dan Jones' article on the
"old navy" - a look at the USS Dolphin.
Colour articles in this issue cover the Royal Australian Navy camouflage in
WW2 by Mike Cooper and French warship colours of WW2 by Falk Pletscher in
which he concentrates on colours for existing kits.
Chris Drage delights PSM readers with yet another diorama. These dioramas,
which are intended to catch a known historical moment, are a triumph of both
research and modelling ability. Chris also finds time to look at the latest
1/700 releases from Skytrex - HMAS Sydney and HMS Ajax.
Merchant naval coverage this issue starts off with Dan describing
and drawing a liquid natural gas (LNG) tanker - the Hoegh Granada - a most
unusual subject. This is followed up with a photo feature by Roy Wolford on
the Japanese Kamikawa Maru class of cargo ships.
With the usual good mix of reviews and articles covering a variety of topics,
Plastic Ship Modeller 25 is a very enjoyable read. A very welcome addition
is the extra photo coverage in the review section which has come about in
response to feedback from the readers. Well done!
