Camouflage Volume Three: Royal Navy 1943-1944
Author: Alan Raven

By: Shane Jenkins

The third volume in this series covers the years 1943-44. By this time, camouflage had settled down to the various types of patterned camouflage - however research was beginning to show that this type of camouflage was of little practical use. By 1944, this view prevailed and new designs were being drawn up, which I assume will be covered in the next volume.

This book follows the same layout as the preceding two volumes with it being divided into "camouflage scheme" with side profiles of various ships in each section. There are also 8 pages of colour profiles while the schemes covered include the following; Emergency Fleet Scheme for Destroyers; Admiralty Disruptive Designs; Dark Hull Upperwork type and unofficial designs. It also covers Coastal Forces Camouflage, U.S. built carriers in British service and addendums to volumes 1 and 2. There are over 175 profiles and 15 photographs showcasing virtually every type of Royal Navy vessel from MGBs right through to aircraft carriers.

With so many ships and schemes covered it is hard not to recommend this book to modellers and researchers alike. However as there is at least one case where the proofreading has fallen down, albeit of a non serious nature, it does lead me to wonder if there are any other mistakes in the text of a more serious nature such as errors in the colour designations which may have slipped through the net. I would recommend that WR Press address this in future volumes

Highly recommended with the above reservation.
