Camouflage Volume Four: Royal Navy Supplemental
Author: Alan Raven
By: David Muir
As the
sub title suggests this final book in Alan Raven's series aims to cover some
of the subjects that were not addressed in the preceding volumes. The basic
format is the same: about 305x 230mm landscape colour card covers showing
paintings of KGV and HMS Effingham. Internally the majority of the pages are
given over to black and white reproductions of shaded profiles for each ship
with a scattering of black and white photos in support. The profiles are very
clear and reproduction of the photos is commendable. Overall the volume is
an essential addition to the series and the more welcome for the athwart ships
details it provides for such things as turrets, hangers and the interior of
the open platforms.
The profiles for the Fairmile MTBs and Landing Craft are provided at a frustratingly
large scale: surely they could have been smaller and a little more about the
fascinating subject squeezed in to the space? Some of the layout of the text,
drawings and photos is a bit ambiguous so you need to read the captions carefully:
if you do then things become clear. My resources for checking the accuracy
of his work against primary references are somewhat limited. Others may have
picked up the odd "error" or disagree with the occasional interpretation,
but most seem to agree that the overwhelming bulk is just fine.
But these are small matters in the breadth and depth of Mr Raven's achievement.
This is a great series and well worth the investment if you have any interest
at all in the subject.
My first three Volumes were purchased from Sandle
Hobbies who kindly provided the copy of Volume Four used for this review.
