Tribal and Battle Class Destroyers
Author: Vince Fazio

By: Shane Jenkins

The Royal Australian Navy operated three Tribal Class Destroyers and two Battle Class Destroyers from 1942 till 1972. Over this period the RAN's Tribals saw action in both World War Two and Korea.
W hile covering briefly the concept and careers of both Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy Tribals, the first part of the book's main focus is on HMAS Arunta, HMAS Warramunga and HMAS Bataan. As such it covers the history of these ships in detail before moving on to the Battle Class.
The second part of the book gives a brief history of the Royal Navy's Battle Class Destroyers and the subsequent disposals but again the main focus is those two used by the Royal Australian Navy - HMAS Anzac and HMAS Tobruk.
While many other books published by the Naval Historical Society of Australia concentrate more on the history of the ship with only a few photos, this book is the opposite. Filled with detail photos and line drawings covering radar fit, armament and the like, modellers should find this invaluable even though there are unfortunately no camouflage schemes given for the Tribals.
As is the case with many self published books, some compromises in production values have been made in order to afford publication. Do not

expect a book similar to something you would purchase in your local bookstore. However every effort is made, the photos and drawings are good, the book itself is well written and if it's information on the Tribals and Battle Classes of the Royal Australian Navy that you want, this book is a must have.
