USS Garcia DE/FF-1040
Corsair Armada - 1/700 resin

By: Shane Jenkins

The Garcia ASW escort and it's sub-class, the Brooke class SAM ships were designed in the late 1950's as replacements for WW2 destroyers. They were enlarged and modified versions of the earlier Bronstein class and all built in the mid to late 60's. They have since been decommissioned although eight ships have been leased to other navies.

This kit by Corsair Armada dates from 1998 and is moulded in a creamy-yellow resin as a waterline kit. No decals or photoetch are supplied but these are easily enough sourced elsewhere. The casting of the parts is excellent, commendably crisp detail with no discernible pinholes. Judicious care will be needed when removing the parts from the "resin wafer" due to the size of the parts themselves. The kit scales out correctly and will make a nice model "out of the box". However the addition/replacement of parts with photoetch will turn this into a very attractive model.

The excellent kit instructions come on two A3 sheets complete with parts list, written instructions, photos and drawings of a completed ship with notations. Although the photos in my example could be a bit lighter in contrast, Corsair Armada cannot be praised enough for their comprehensive instruction sheet. Everything you need to know is clearly explained.

While some experience in photoetch will be required to bring out the kit's fullest potential., this kit makes a nice entry level kit for the novice resin ship builder. Any modeller with a few plastic kits under their belt will do this kit justice while becoming familiar with a resin kit. Clear instructions, sharp casting, all in all a very buildable kit. Highly recommended.
